What is Pop art?
Pop Art was the movement in art when artists began to create art with the subject of things that are the iconic in nature such as famous people, advertising, and movies. The British and the American people were responsible for setting off this type of art in the 1950's and 60's. The most important aspect of pop art was the fact the picture had to literally pop off the page with it's vibrant colors and cartoony style of drawing.

The leading figure in the pop art movement, is considered to be the father of pop art. Famous for his paintings of the 32 Campbell Soup Cans.

Blek le Rat (Xavier Prow): France
Began his career stencilling pictures of rats, where he gained the nickname Blek le Rat. He moved onto graffiti art where he was arrested several times before joining the pop art movement. Rat is a very influential figure among graffiti art scene.

Roy Lichtenstein: USA
One of the prominent leaders of the pop art movement along with Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist. He was featured in many art shows and galleries among the 1960s. Lichtenstein had a different style compared to Warhol and Rosenquist, he liked to do pop art with cartoon captions and was featured in many comic book scenes. He was known for doing scenes of unhappy affairs and several pictures of blond women.

Banksy (Paul Horner): England
Banksy is an English based street artist that made his way to fame through graffiti art. He has been known to feud with the government over art vs. vandalism. Like Blek de Rat, he is much more influential in the graffiti art scene. Banksy has been accused of copying Rat's art but both Rat and Banksy deny the claims. Banksy has also made a move in the film industry with a documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop" which won Banksy an Academy Award for Best Documentary.

James Rosenquist: USA
One of the main protagonists of the pop art movement, he started training through an unconventional way of billboard painting. This was perfect training for one of the young artists that would quite literally explode into the pop art scene. Many of his paintings are featured in museums such as MoMA and National Gallery of Modern Art.

Tom Wesselmann: USA
Tom had an usual way of starting his career, he majored in Psychology at the University of Cincinnati before being drafted into the US Army. During his time spent in the army, he became interested in cartoons and decided to pursue a career in cartooning. He achieved little success in this field and was inspired by a painting called the "Elegy by the Spanish Republic". This inspired him to turn to join the pop art movement and this is where his cartooning skills were put into good use.
